L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad to seek Telangana government support for new train sets to increase daily services, aiming for 10 lakh passengers.
L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH), which has built and runs the Hyderabad Metro Rail phase one operations between thee dense traffic corridors in Telangana’s capital, has sought the State governmentsupport for purchasing the new train sets to increase the number of daily services from 1,075 trips presently.
CEO and managing director K.V.B. Reddy said the process for purchasing 10 new three coach train sets is on and three indigenous manufacturing firms have been identified for the same.
“We have already visited the facilities and held discussions with them. Finance is a serious problem so we sought government help. We may also have to go for new design as no one is making the 57 Hyundai Rotem three coach train sets being used currently,” he told the media on Wednesday (January 8, 2025).
A proposal to take metro trains from Nagpur and Pune Metro Rails was nixed because ridership in both the cities rose dramatically once new lines were opened in both cities and hence, they could not spare any train sets. Moreover, the commercial proposition too was not feasible, he said.
The managing director stated that it could take six months for new design coaches to be finalised and from there on, it could take 15-18 months for new train sets to made once the purchase order is finalised.
In the meantime, efforts are on to increase the short loop line trips from Mettuguda/Begumpet to Raidurg to cater to the rush hour commuter traffic in the morning and evening hours.
“With a little bit of discipline, we can accommodate seven lakh passengers from five lakh passengers with existing train sets if riders can move away from the doors as the centre part is empty. Once the 10 new train sets arrive, we aim to carry 10 lakh passengers a day,” maintained Mr. KVB Reddy.
