Kerala Cabinet recommends ADGPs for promotion to DGP amid controversy, potential political implications, and ongoing investigations.
The Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday (December 18, 2024) accepted the recommendation of a high-level screening committee that Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M.R. Ajith Kumar and ADGP S. Suresh be promoted to Director General of Police (DGP) rank.
The screening committee comprising the Chief Secretary, the Home Secretary, and the Director of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) made the recommendation to the Cabinet.
Top government sources said the two officials will likely continue in their ADGP rank till further vacancies arise.
Currently, the Centre has sanctioned only four DGP posts for Kerala. However, it made an exception for Nitin Agarwal, an IPS officer from the 1989 batch in the Kerala Cadre.
The Centre allowed the State to appoint Mr. Agarwal as the commissioner of the Kerala Road Safety Authority, with the rank of DGP.
It created a temporary DGP rank to accommodate Mr. Agarwal who served as Director General of the Border Security Force until August 2024. However, the temporary DGP post will cease to exist on December 31, 2024.
Officials said the Kerala Cabinet’s decision was not likely a precursor to naming one of the two ADGPs earmarked for promotion as the State Police Chief (SPC). The incumbent SPC, Sheikh Darvesh Saheb, will retire on June 30, 2025.

The Karnataka government has drafted a comprehensive master plan for the integrated development of Kukke Subrahmanya temple, the State’s highest revenue-generating temple managed by the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department. The redevelopment initiative is estimated to cost around ₹254 crore and aims to enhance infrastructure and facilities for devotees.
