With Karimnagar Mayor Y. Sunil Rao switching loyalty to the BJP, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) city unit suffered a jolt in its traditional stronghold Karimnagar.
Barely three days before the expiry of his tenure as Mayor, Mr. Sunil Rao joined the saffron party along with two BRS corporators in the presence of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar in Karimnagar on Saturday. Mr Rao’s move drew a sharp reaction from the BRS city unit president Ch. Harishankar. He accused Mr Rao of betraying the BRS leadership with political opportunism.
Rebutting the allegations, Mr Rao said he joined the BJP to ensure that Karimnagar continues its march on the path of development. He said Mr. Bandi Sanjay took the keen initiative to develop Karimnagar city under the Smart City Mission. “I have joined the BJP with the firm belief in the leadership of Mr Sanjay to ensure further development of the city,” he added.
