Junior doctors in West Bengal protest CBI's handling of R.G. Kar Medical College rape case, demanding justice.
Kolkata:
Junior doctors in West Bengal have stepped up their protest seeking justice for the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder victim. Doctors protesting at Esplanade led a march to the CGO complex on Tuesday (December 24, 2024), raising questions on the role of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This comes after two accused in the case were granted bail after CBI officials failed to file a chargesheet within the first 90 days of the arrest.

The march, organised by multiple doctors’ bodies, was stopped by the police while the protesters tried to enter the CGO complex. The doctors carried dummy locks with them which had a slogan written on it, “Give justice to Abhaya or put a lock on your doors and go home.” A scuffle erupted between the two parties as the protesters tried to break the barricades.
A resident doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Aniket Mahato, said people had lost faith in the CBI and its investigation. Dr. Mahato added, “If the CBI cannot give justice, if they behave like this, if the State police treat us like this, then where will the common man go to seek justice?”
Another protesting doctor alleged that the CBI was protecting culprits. This comes in response to the release of former R.G. Kar principal, Sandip Ghosh, and Tala Thana officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal, who were granted bail after the investigating agency failed to file a charge sheet within the statutory 90 days of the arrest. The two were arrested for allegedly misleading evidence and delaying in filing the FIR.
