"People are wondering why Trump would start a war with our closest allies," the comic said.
Jimmy Fallon joked that Donald Trump is starting beef with American allies because he doesn’t seem to view them as such.
“Over the weekend, President Trump announced new tariffs on Canada and Mexico that are expected to start a trade war,” the “Tonight Show” comic said in his Monday night monologue.
“People are wondering why Trump would start a war with our closest allies, and he was like, ‘I didn’t say anything about Russia and North Korea.’”
Trump, famous for heaping praise on Russia and North Korea’s dictatorial leaders, on Saturday announced tariffs of 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada, the country’s two largest trading partners.
It appeared poised to start a trade war as Mexico and Canada ordered retaliatory tariffs. On Monday, the president agreed to a 30-day pause on imposing the tariffs to allow for a period of negotiations with the neighboring nations.
