JEE policy U-turn: SC protects students who quit college based on November 5 notification

Supreme Court refrains from commenting on JEE attempts increase, allows third attempt for affected students.
The Supreme Court on Friday (January 10, 2025) refrained from commenting on the wisdom of the Joint Admission Board’s decision to increase the number of permissible attempts for JEE (Advanced) test to three for students who had appeared for Class 12 exams in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
The board’s decision was announced through a press release on November 5, 2024, only for it to abruptly take a U-turn on November 18, 2024, reducing the attempts back to two as before.
The apex court has however said students who had dropped out of their engineering colleges between November 5 and November 18 last year to pursue their IIT entrance coaching would be able to avail the third attempt as promised in the Board’s November 5 release.
“The withdrawal of the November 5 promise subsequently on November 18 cannot be allowed to act to the detriment of the students,” the court said.
Twenty-two IIT aspirants had approached the apex court challenging the abrupt stoppage of the policy allowing them three permissible attempts.
