Namma Laundry: Inclusive laundry service empowering deaf individuals in Coimbatore, funded by Visteon's CSR initiative.
‘Namma Laundry’, a laundry facility aimed at supporting individuals with hearing disabilities and fostering self-sustainability, was inaugurated by e Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran on Saturday.
The facility, established at a cost of ₹2 lakh, was funded through Visteon’s CSR initiative in collaboration with the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) and implemented by Deaf Leaders Foundation, a non-governmental organisation focused on empowering the deaf community.
Located in Saibaba Colony, the facility is managed by four hearing-impaired individuals, providing end-to-end laundry services, including washing and ironing.
“Deaf individuals often face inequality in workplaces, and many struggle to find employment. That’s why we established this facility. This is reportedly the first inclusive laundry service in Coimbatore. We offer affordable services and have trained deaf individuals to handle end-to-end operations. To ensure sustainability, we will support them with a fixed salary for six months, after which they will manage their own orders and earnings. We also use skin- and eco-friendly detergents. Going forward, we aim to set up more such facilities to help the deaf community lead self-sufficient lives,” said a spokesperson from Deaf Leaders Foundation.
