Hubballi Police shoot murder suspects in legs after escape attempt during 'mahazar,' investigation reveals case of vengeance.
The Hubballi Police shot three murder accused in the legs after they tried to escape by assaulting the police during ‘mahazar’ on Tuesday (January 28, 2024) morning.
Late on Monday night, a gang of five youths had brutally murdered Akash Vamiki (22) in the parking lot of a bar and restaurant under Vidyanagar Police Station limits. The crime was caught on the CCTV camera and following a manhunt, the police arrested Abhishek Shirrur, Yallappa Koti and Vinod Ambiger — all residents of Anandnagar in Hubballi.
However, when the police took them for ‘mahazar,’ the accused attacked police sub-inspectors Sunil M. and Shreemanth Hunasikatti, and constables Muttappa Lamani and Sharanagouda Mulimani in their bid to escape.
As the situation spiralled out of control, the PSIs Sunil M. and Shreemanth Hunasikatti opened fire and shot the three accused in the legs. The wounded accused along with the injured PSIs and constables are being treated at KMCRI Hospital in Hubballi.
Speaking to presspersons after enquring about the health of the injured accused and police personnel, Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar said that it was a case of vengeance.
“The deceased person was also an accused in a case. His team and the accused had quarrelled before on several occasions. Out of vengeance, they had planned and carried out the murder on January 27 night,” he said.
The police are on the look-out for two others who are involved in the murder.
