Madras High Court orders inquiry into inmate assault at Puzhal Central Prison, report due by December 17.
The Madras High Court has directed the Tiruvallur Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) to conduct an inquiry and submit a report regarding a complaint related to an inmate of the Central Prison in Puzhal having been assaulted by a prison official on October 16, 2024.
A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and M. Jothiraman directed the CJM to visit the prison, record the statement of M. Jeyanthan, the inmate, in the absence of the prison officials, and submit a detailed report, along with his opinion, by December 17.
The orders were passed on a writ petition filed by the inmate’s mother M. Ananthi, who claimed that a lawyer had informed her about the attack on October 17 but her son refused to divulge anything to her on October 18 despite showing signs of injuries on the face and right eye. Suspecting that he might not have spoken out because of the fear of prison officials, Ms. Ananthi sought for a direction to the State government to initiate appropriate action against the officials concerned.

The Karnataka government has drafted a comprehensive master plan for the integrated development of Kukke Subrahmanya temple, the State’s highest revenue-generating temple managed by the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department. The redevelopment initiative is estimated to cost around ₹254 crore and aims to enhance infrastructure and facilities for devotees.
