German citizens in Kerala cast postal votes for federal elections, highlighting unique voting process and key election issues.
Four German citizens cast postal votes at the German Honorary Consulate in the city on Monday for the German federal elections.
This is the first time that German citizens have cast their votes for their national elections from Kerala.
The federal elections are due to take place on February 23.
German nationals Rainer Helbing, Uta Helbing, Evelyn Kirn and Veronika Zhuravleva who are holidaying in Kerala cast their votes by producing their passports and signing a declaration. The postal ballots would be flown to the German Consulate in Bengaluru on Monday night and from there to Berlin on Tuesday, Honorary Consul Syed Ibrahim said.
Unlike India which has shifted to electronic voting machines (EVM), Germany uses paper ballots. Germans who are 18 and older are eligible to vote. German voters have two votes—one to elect members directly and the second to choose a political party. The latter clause ensures that parties with a minimum of 5% votes are represented in Parliament.
Issues such as the emergence of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), the alleged attempts by business tycoon Elon Musk to influence German voters through his open posts supporting the AfD and increasing levels of anti-migrant trends have turned this year’s elections a keenly watched one.
