Ford to hold news conference as Ontario threatens 25% surcharge on U.S.-bound electricity
CBC
Premier Doug Ford is set to hold a news conference Monday morning as Ontario prepares to move ahead with a 25 per cent surcharge on U.S.-bound electricity in response to President Donald Trump's tariffs.
Ford is scheduled to speak alongside Energy Minister Stephen Lecce at Queen's Park beginning at 11 a.m. ET. You can watch the appearance live in this story.
The surcharge on electricity is one of several retaliatory measures Ontario is undertaking in its fight against tariffs. Ontario supplies electricity to roughly 1.5 million customers in New York, Michigan and Minnesota.
While Trump temporarily paused implementation of 25 per cent tariffs on Canadians exports "compliant" with the terms of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), Ford has said he will move forward with the levy on electricity until tariffs are lifted entirely.
The province has also removed all American booze from LCBO shelves, walked away from a $100-million contract with Elon Musk's Starlink internet provider and moved to exclude U.S. companies from roughly $30 billion in annual procurements.
The federal government has similarly said it will move ahead with retaliatory tariffs on roughly $155 billion worth of goods until Trump relents.
