Fishermen and women jump into sea to oppose Keni commercial port in Karnataka

Hundreds of fishermen in Keni village, near Ankola in Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka, jumped into the Arabian Sea to register their opposition to the commercial port project at Keni. Most of the protesters were women.
Despite prohibitory orders by the Deputy Commissioner of Uttar Kannada district, over 1,000 protesters gathered at the beach around 8 a.m. on February 24. They demanded that the Deputy Commissioner come to the site.
Police had been deployed in the area.
When the Deputy Commissioner did not respond, hundreds of women began jumping into the sea. Three women fell ill and two of them are in serious condition. They have been admitted to the district hospital.
The situation at the site remains tense.
