Farmers staged a protest in Vijayapura on February 28 against release of water from Almatti dam to Telangana.
The protesters burned effigies of Water Resources Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for releasing water during summer months.
They blew conch shells to condemn the State Government’s move to release 1.27 tmcft of water from the Lal Bahadur Shastri reservoir to the Jurala dam in Rangareddy district of Telangana.
They such decisions could ruin the lives of farmers in the twin districts of Bagalkot and Vijayapura.
Akhand Karnataka Raitha Sangha members gathered at Ambedkar Circle and raised slogans against the ‘anti-farmer’ Water Resources Minister and the Chief Minister.
Aravind Kulkarni, State general secretary of the sangha, said that the release of water was a political decision and not a technical one. “We have no water to drink. Currently, only 33 TMC of water is left in the Almatti dam. This water should be reserved for industrial purposes, aquatic animals, people and livestock, and the farmers of the district. But the Congress government in Karnataka has forgotten its primary responsibility towards farmers and has yielded to its fellow partymen in Telangana. Following Telangana government’s request to the Karnataka government to release 5 TMC of water from Almatti, the State Government has released 1.27 tmcft. We should not forget that Telangana has opposed our efforts to raise the height of the Almatti dam, following the Supreme court’s orders. If they do not co-operate with us, why should we co-operate with them?
Mr Kulkarni objected to the silence of two ministers from Vijayapura district — M. B. Patil and Shivanand Patil — over the release of water.
