The distribution of Pongal gift hampers to cardholders in the Erode (East) Assembly constituency, where the Model Code of Conduct is in force, began on Saturday, with permission from the Election Commission.
The State government had announced the distribution of one kg of raw rice, one kg sugar, and a whole sugarcane, at ration shops starting January 9. While the distribution of gift hampers began at ration shops across the district, it did not commence at shops located within the constituency, where polling is scheduled for February 5. Officials said that permission has been secured, and that all cardholders will receive the hampers within the next three days.
