
Elephant calf that fell into well in Kerala rescued

Forest officials rescue elephant calf fallen into well in Kerala, highlighting the need for wildlife protection and conservation efforts.
A nearly-two-year-old elephant calf that had fallen into a well at Pinavoorkudy in Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district of Kerala was rescued by Forest department officials late on Monday (December 2, 2024) night.
The male calf accidentally slipped into the shallow well located at the Pinavoorkudy tribal settlement area, outside the forest area at around 9.30 p.m.
Officials from the Valara forest station rescued the animal with the support of the rapid response team of Urulanthanny and a Fire and Rescue Services team. The wall of the well was demolished to provide a pathway for the animal to get out, said Ramesh Bishnoi, Divisional Forest Officer, Munnar.
The animal that came out of the well after nearly one hour joined the herd, he said.
Incidentally, there have been a few instances of elephants falling into the wells in the forest areas of the district.
