Egg prices soar in Namakkal as procurement price hits ₹5.90, impacting poultry farms and market prices.
The egg procurement price for the first time touched ₹5.90 per egg in Namakkal, and in the retail market, it touched ₹6.50 to ₹7 per egg.
In Namakkal district, more than 1,100 poultry farms are there that house around seven crore birds. Per day these poultry farms produce more than five crore eggs. These eggs are sent to various parts of the state and also to Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry. Likewise, eggs are also exported to foreign countries, especially to Gulf countries.
Apart from this, eggs are supplied to the noon meal scheme at government and aided schools. Following the monsoon season, the price started to increase for the past two weeks, and now it has touched ₹5.90 per egg. This is the first time in the history of the Namakkal poultry industry that egg procurement touched ₹5.90. The higher procurement price earlier was ₹5.85.
Poultry owners claimed that due to the increase in fodder price, the production cost of eggs has also increased. So, new birds were not added into the poultry farms. Normally during Sabarimala season, the price of eggs will be reduced, and the consumption will also comes down. But due to egg production being reduced by 5% to 10%, the procurement price is increasing. Even though the procurement price is ₹5.90 per egg, the production cost has touched ₹5.40 per egg. So, the profit is also reduced for poultry farms, they added.
Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Egg Poultry Farmers Marketing Society, Vangli Subramaniam, said that the consumption of eggs in North Indian States increased due to the winter season. So, the eggs sent to those States have increased, which resulted in an increase in procurement price. In the coming days, egg prices may increase further, Mr. Subramaniam added.

The Karnataka government has drafted a comprehensive master plan for the integrated development of Kukke Subrahmanya temple, the State’s highest revenue-generating temple managed by the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department. The redevelopment initiative is estimated to cost around ₹254 crore and aims to enhance infrastructure and facilities for devotees.
