The proposal to build a vehicular underpass at the G. Corner intersection in the city on the Chennai-Tiruchi Bypass got a fresh lease of life with the officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Southern Railway conducting a joint inspection of the spot, along with and at the behest of Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko, on Saturday.
The demand for the underpass to provide proper access to Golden Rock and other residential areas had persisted ever since the widening of the bypass into a four-lane highway. The bypass forms part of the Chennai-Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway section, catering to a heavy volume of traffic round-the-clock.
Mr. Durai Vaiko told presspersons that the demand of the residents had remained unfulfilled for about 15 years. Even a public interest litigation had been filed.
The underpass should have been built when the four-lane project was executed but the railways had declined to provide land at the intersection then. Subsequently, the railways agreed in principle to provide land but the two agencies could not agree on who should fund the project, the MP said.
“Golden Rock houses the Central Railway Workshop with over 5,000 employees and several educational institutions. Besides, over a lakh residents of about 15 residential colonies commute through the intersection, which has become congested and accident prone. The service road accommodates two-way traffic and there is an urgent need to solve the issue of public importance,” he said.
“The NHAI and Railway officials have now agreed to pursue the proposal and I will take it up with the Ministers and senior officials of the Ministries concerned and ensure that the underpass is built at the earliest,” Mr. Durai Vaiko said.
Tiruchi Divisional Railway Manager M.S. Anbalagan, NHAI Project Director A.N. Praveen Kumar, and other senior officials were present during the inspection.
