BJP Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai on Wednesday (January 29, 2025) accused the DMK government of not taking adequate measures to curb crimes against women in the State.
Referring to a video that was widely circulated on social media platforms, in which a group of men in a four-wheeler was seen chasing and obstructing the movement of another vehicle carrying a group of women by attempting to waylay them at night on the East Coast Road, Mr. Annamalai said: “Women are unable to move around safely in the State. The incident on the East Coast Road is just another example of the deteriorating law and order situation in Tamil Nadu under the DMK’s rule,” he said, while addressing mediapersons.
Mr. Annamalai also urged the State government to purchase more police patrol vehicles, particularly two-wheelers, for the benefit of beat police officers conducting night patrolling. He also suggested increasing the number of police stations and recruiting more police personnel to ensure the proper maintenance of law and order in the State.
He also condemned the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the sexual assault on a student on Anna University campus for allegedly confiscating the mobile phones and electronic devices of some journalists in connection with the leak of the First Information Report (FIR) in the case. “It is highly condemnable and an attempt to threaten journalists. There is no need to seize their electronic devices,” he said.
Further, Mr. Annamalai said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was “daydreaming” about winning the 2026 Assembly election. “Earlier, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted roadshows, Mr. Stalin criticised such programmes. Even permission was denied for the roadshow in Coimbatore. But now, he [Mr. Stalin] is conducting roadshows at different places.”
In a statement, Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan said the State government should take strict action against those who waylaid the women’s car on the East Coast Road. He said the police should curb crimes against women with an iron fist.
