Southern Railway has submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the redevelopment of the Kumbakonam railway station to the Railway Board, New Delhi, for sanction.
The Deputy Chief Engineer/II/Gauge Conversion, Tiruchi, of the Southern Railway, gave this information in his reply on January 22 to an application filed by a Kumbakonam-based resident under the Right to Information Act 2005.
The Southern Railway Construction Organisation has been entrusted with the task of drawing up a plan for revamping the station. A technical consultancy firm has been hired to prepare the master plan. The proposal envisages creation of a host of new amenities and facilities in order to give a complete makeover for the station.
Rail users in Kumbakonam have called for sanction to the project with allocation of adequate funds to enable early commencement of work so that the revamped station could be ready well before the ‘Mahamaham’ in Kumbakonam in 2028, said A. Giri, secretary, Thanjavur District Railway Users’ Association.
Ahead of the presentation of the Union Budget 2025 on February 1, rail users have placed a set of demands before the Centre. Prominent among them is approval and allocation of funds for the long-pending demand to double the Thanjavur-Villupuram mainline section.
Mr. Giri said rail users in the delta region were expecting approval for revival of the railway line between Mayiladuthurai and Tharangambadi with extension up to Tirunallar and allocation of funds for the new line from Thiruthuraipoondi to Nagapattinam via Thirukuvalai for its early completion.
