Murder accused evading arrest for two years caught in Punjab after changing appearance to evade police.
A murder accused on the run for nearly two years was caught from Punjab last week, the Delhi police said. Surjit Singh, 27, a resident of west Delhi, along with another person, allegedly stabbed a 29-year-old delivery executive, Sagar Singh, on June 15, 2022 over a smoking-related dispute. While the other accused was arrested soon after, Surjit Singh changed his appearance over the years to evade arrest and disguised himself as a ‘Nihang’, who belong to the armed Sikh warrior order, and lived in Amritsar. He was declared a ‘Proclaimed Offender’ by a city court.
A team constituted to locate Surjeet visited several potential hideouts in Delhi and Punjab. He was eventually traced to Amritsar. Information from sources confirmed that Surjeet had changed his appearance and was hiding in Batala. The team went to Punjab and, after a week, arrested him from Madiaval village near Batala Bypass in Gurdaspur,” said a senior officer.
