With over 74,000 votes, Mr. Negi was leading by over 28,000 votes as of 1.35 p.m. according to data from the Election Commission of India. Avadh Ojha of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was trailing at the second place with 45,988 votes and Congress’ Anil Kumar was at the third place with over 16,500 votes.
The BJP won six Assembly seats and was leading in 42 while the AAP won six and was leading in 16 seats. The Congress was yet to open its account.
Mr. Negi, notoriously, forced all meat shops to close in east Delhi’s Vinod Nagar area during Navratri in 2023 when he was a councillor. In a video that garnered widespread attention then, Mr. Negi was seen asking meat shops in the area to down their shutters. “We didn’t force them to shut their shops, we just requested them to do so keeping in mind the religious beliefs and sentiments of devotees,” he had said.
More recently, PM Modi, in a viral video, was seen bowing to touch Mr. Negi’s feet. Mr. Modi was addressing an election rally in Delhi when Mr. Negi bowed to touch his feet once on stage and in response, Mr. Modi was seen bowing to touch his feet thrice.
