Director-General of Prisons in Telangana opens new weaving unit at Nizamabad Central Prison to enhance inmate rehabilitation.
Soumya Mishra, Director-General of Prisons and Correctional Services of Telangana, visited the Central Prison in Nizamabad on Monday (February 3) to announce the opening of a new weaving unit.
The unit was established by transferring weaving machines from the Central Prison in Cherlapalli, following the closure of a weaving unit in Warangal.
Since its upgrade to a Central Prison in 2021, the Nizamabad jail has been running a steel industrial unit, a printing press, a tailoring unit and a phenyl unit. The weaving unit is expected to further enhance inmate rehabilitation and skill development.
The unit would produce clothing, towels, napkins and bed sheets for prisoners and undertrials across jails in the Warangal range, and surplus items would be sold to the public. It will employ 26 inmates and operate with 13 weaving machines, providing wages and vocational training to support prisoner reformation.
Ms. Mishra also toured the sub-jail at Kamareddy, where she interacted with inmates and reviewed the facilities available to them.
She was accompanied by M. Sampath, DIG Prisons, Warangal Range; Sindhu Sharma, In-charge Commissioner of Police, Nizamabad; and Anandrao, Superintendent of Central Prison, Nizamabad.
While the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s (BWSSB) policy of allowing apartments to sell treated sewage water is a new alternative water source, the real challenge lies in the transportation of this water. Apartment complexes with surplus treated water are finding it difficult to sell it as tankers are not available, among other logistical reasons.
