Cyclonic storm approaching Tamil Nadu coast, heavy rainfall expected with orange and yellow alerts issued for coastal districts.
The deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary during the past 6 hours and lay centred at 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday (November 27, 2024) over the same region, about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, 320 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 410 km southeast of Puducherry and 490 km south-southeast of Chennai, a bulletin by the India Meteorological Department said.

It is very likely to continue to move nearly north-northwestwards skirting Sri Lanka coast and intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours, the bulletin added. It will continue to move north-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram around November 30 morning as a deep depression with a wind speed of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph.
With the cyclonic storm brewing over the Bay of Bengal predicted to move towards the Tamil Nadu coast, heavy downpour is likely to continue over the coastal areas of the State till Sunday (December 1, 2024).
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued orange and yellow alerts, which indicate rainfall of heavy to very heavy intensity, for various coastal districts, including Chennai, on Thursday (November 28, 2024).
