Under the impact of Cyclone Fengal, which crossed the Tamil Nadu coast bordering south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Saturday night, various parts of Visakhapatnam city received incessant rainfall on Sunday as well.
Rainfall was more in northern parts of the city such as Madhurawada, Kapuluppada, Anandapuram, Yendada, Sagarnagar, Bheemili and Visakhapatnam zoo. The weather observation centre at the Marine Police Station in Rushikonda recorded 38 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, while Bheemili recorded 9 mm of rainfall from 8.31 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday alone.
As the weather cooled down with light rains from Sunday morning to evening, the locals visited the beaches to enjoy the Sunday. The beaches looked pleasant with cloudy skies and cool breeze.
Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) commissioner P. Sampath Kumar directed his staff, particularly the Public Health Department, to ensure that no health issues arise due to untimely rains and asked them to remove garbage and waste along the storm water drains.
Speaking to The Hindu, GVMC 6th Ward Sanitation and Environmental Secretary T. Chandrasekhara Rao at PM Palem, said that the civic body was engaged in removing garbage as per the instructions of higher authorities. No major issues were reported in the area as there was light to moderate rainfall across the two days. The Car Shed Junction of PM Palem near Jathara park received 31.5 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, he added.
Accusing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of trying to “cheat” the people of Madurai district by adopting a resolution against the proposed tungsten mining project in and around Arittapatti village, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss demanded that the State enact a law to safeguard the entire 5,000 acres of land in the village by declaring it as a ‘protected biodiversity zone’.
