Cultural programmes and distribution of welfare assistance marked the Republic Day celebrations in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts.
The proceedings began in both the districts commenced with the unfurling of the tricolour by the respective Collectors, B. Priyanka Pankajam and T. Charushree, at 8.05 a.m.
It was followed by the inspection and acceptance of the customary guard of honours presented by the police and the NCC contingents belonging to the Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts.
While the Thanjavur Collector distributed welfare assistances worth ₹2.29 crore to 63 beneficiaries, the Tiruvarur Collector presented ₹28.56 lakh worth assistances to 27 beneficiaries on the occasion.
A total of 200 government employees received certificates for their ‘meritorious’ service at the function held at the Armed Reserve Police Parade Grounds at Thanjavur and 285 government employees in Tiruvarur district received certificates at the function held at the District Sports Stadium at Tiruvarur. Students from various schools in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts presented cultural programmes on the occasion at their respective district headquarters.
Meanwhile, Mayors, Municipal and Town Panchayat Chairmen of the respective civic bodies in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts unfurled the national flags at their respective local body headquarters.
Similarly, the heads of higher educational institutions such as M. Krishnan, Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Tamil Nadu, Neelakudi, Tiruvarur district; and K. Sankar, Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) of Tamil University, Thanjavur, unfurled the tricolour at their respective institutions.
