Councillors demand basic amenities in Salem first council meeting

The first council meeting of the newly-elected Salem Corporation was held here on Monday.
Minister for Municipal Administration K.N.Nehru, DMK MLA R.Rajendran, District Collector S.Karmegham PMK MLA R.Arul were present during the beginning of the council meeting. Mr. Nehru presented the sceptre to Mayor A. Ramachandran before beginning the proceedings. The Minister said that the State government would provide all necessary support for the development of Salem Corporation.
Councillors of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a walk out from the meeting charging that the DMK won the urban local body elections through malpractices. Resolutions appreciating the State government and regarding formation of standing committees, women reservation in committees were passed. Six standing committees would be formed, Accounts, Education, Public Health, Taxation and Finance, Town Planning and Improvement, Works committees would be formed with nine members in each, five members in each committee would be women.
The councillors demanded steps to be taken to address basic needs of the public. They also demanded construction of a compound wall for Vaykalpattarai government school and improve the amenities at school. They also demanded that they should be informed when works are being carried out in respective wards. The members also demanded that drainage, drinking water works must be carried out before laying roads. The councillors demanded that paver block roads should be laid at places where the length is 10ft or less. VCK Councillor M.Imayavarman alleged irregularities in the biocapping of waste in Erumapalayam.
