A section of conservancy workers under Salem Corporation protested outside the Corporation’s main office here on Monday demanding action against ‘corrupt’ sanitary officials.
The workers said they were from listed communities and alleged that sanitary inspectors and supervisors were demanding bribe from them to retain their jobs and not to transfer them to different Wards.
The workers alleged that while 25-30 workers had to be deployed for sanitary work twice a day in a Ward, only a few members were being deployed in Wards under Kondalampatti and Hasthampatti zone. They also alleged that conservancy workers, who were kept in reserve, were being deployed instead of actual workers and sanitary officials were taking a bribe of ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 from them.
The workers alleged that the officials demanded bribe for issuing birth and death certificates. Attendance of conservancy workers who did not turn up for work was also forged and bribe was taken from their pay. They complained that those who opposed the wrongdoings were transferred to different Wards.
The protesters also complained that they had not received their salary for two months and urged the Corporation to take immediate measures.
