Wayanad DCC treasurer suicide: Congress MLA arrested in abetment to suicide case, released on bail; investigation reveals corruption allegations within party.
A special police team arrested I.C. Balakrishnan, the Congress MLA from Sulthan Bathery, on Saturday (January 25, 2025) in the abetment to suicide case related to the death of former Wayanad DCC treasurer N.M. Vijayan and his son Jijesh. Mr. Balakrishnan was later released on bail.
The police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sultan Bathery) K.K. Abdul Shareef arrested the Congress leader after three days of questioning.
Previously N.D. Appachan, DCC president, Wayanad, and K.K. Gopinathan, former DCC treasurer, had been questioned and arrested in connection with the continuing investigation into the incident. All three of them had been granted anticipatory bail by the Principal Sessions Court, Kalpetta.

The police had already arraigned Mr. Balakrishnan as the first accused in the case registered under section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita which attracts punishment with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years.
Vijayan, before his death, had written six letters to various Congress leaders and the police. In these letters, he had indicated that he was compelled to take his life because of corruption in the party and reportedly named these Congress leaders in Wayanad for taking bribes for giving jobs in cooperative banks linked to the party.
It was on December 24, 2024 that Vijayan, 78, a former president of the Sulthan Bathery grama panchayat and his son Jijesh, 38, a former employee of the Sulthan Bathery Urban Cooperative Bank, were found in a critical condition at their residence after allegedly consuming poison. The two died at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on December 27.
