SIIDS members in Thoothukudi petition for land allotment for disabled individuals, while residents oppose sewage plant construction in Kayalpattinam.
Members of Southern Integrated Disabled Development Society (SIIDS), Thoothukudi, submitted a petition at the weekly grievance meeting at the Collectorate on Monday, voicing concerns over land allotment by the government for differently abled individuals .
President of SIIDS A. Bercil said the State government had allotted free house pattas for disabled persons in various locations across Thoothukudi district, but the locations were not disclosed yet. The members of the society urged the officials to identify and allocate the lands promptly. They also called for the opening of toilets constructed for differently abled at the bus terminus and provision of wheelchairs at government hospitals and offices
Collector K. Elambahavath assured them that arrangement of wheelchair facilities at government offices would be implemented within a few days.
Residents from Kayalpattinam also voiced their opposition to the proposed construction of a sewage treatment plant in their area. They said that for over 300 years people from the southern part of Kayalpattinam spanning Koman Pudur, Sethu Raja Street, Mutharamman Koil Street, Gulam Sakib Thambi Garden, Sivan Kovil Street and Mangala Vinayagar Kovil Street had been using the vacant land in the area as cemetery.
However, last month, the municipality began demolishing parts of the cemetery to make way for the sewage plant. The residents urged the district administration to intervene and reclassify the land as a burial ground.

The Karnataka government has drafted a comprehensive master plan for the integrated development of Kukke Subrahmanya temple, the State’s highest revenue-generating temple managed by the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department. The redevelopment initiative is estimated to cost around ₹254 crore and aims to enhance infrastructure and facilities for devotees.
