Chennai Mayor R. Priya flagged off 57 new vehicles for the removal of construction and debris waste, in addition to the existing 102. A total of 159 vehicles will now be used for intensive cleaning in zones 1 to 15 of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
The new vehicles include tipper lorries, mini lorries, excavators, and heavy machines.
The move comes after the GCC planned to go back to outsourcing the management of construction and debris (C&D) waste. The civic body has approved ‘Micro Implementation and Operation Plans’ in all 15 zones, which are expected to be implemented by a private firm.
According to a press release, total of ₹13 lakh in fines was collected from 260 individuals for illegally dumping construction debris between January 1 and February 28, 2025. Offenders are being fined ₹5,000, with repeat violators facing police action.
In the last two months, 54,800 metric tonnes of construction and demolition waste were collected from across the city, according to Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran in a post on X platform.
This includes 21,582.51 metric tonnes in January, 28,918.73 metric tonnes in February, and 4,315.3 metric tonnes from March 1 to 4.
The waste was moved to the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards, where recycling measures are being implemented.
