Inter-Ministerial team assesses Cyclone Fengal damages in Puducherry, Chief Minister seeks ₹600 crore Central assistance.
The inter-Ministerial team deputed by the Central government to study the impact of Cyclone Fengal in the Union Territory completed their spot assessment of damages in Puducherry on Monday.
On the last day of the team’s two-day visit to Puducherry, the seven-member team, after splitting into two groups on Monday, inspected 24 places, including Kalapet, Pillaichavady, Krishna Nagar, Rainbow Nagar and Venkata Nagar areas in the region. After winding up the field visit, the team members attended a presentation made by District Collector A. Kulothungan.
Mr. Kulothungan gave a detailed presentation on the difficulties faced by people due to flooding, damage to crops, livestock, civic infrastructure and about the relief works carried out by the government during the time of calamity in Puducherry. Around 15 videos explaining the impact of Cyclone Fengal in Puducherry were screened as part of the presentation. The presentation was to justify the demand already made by the Chief Minister N. Rangasamy for an interim Central assistance of ₹600 crore, said an official.
The Chief Minister had written separate letters to the Prime Minister and Home Minister seeking ₹600 crore assistance to compensate for the loss due to Cyclone Fengal and subsequent floods in villages as a result of water released from dams in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
Accusing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of trying to “cheat” the people of Madurai district by adopting a resolution against the proposed tungsten mining project in and around Arittapatti village, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss demanded that the State enact a law to safeguard the entire 5,000 acres of land in the village by declaring it as a ‘protected biodiversity zone’.
