Budget 2025: Government to allocate ₹10,000 crore under Urban Challenge Fund for 2025-26

Government allocates ₹1 lakh crore Urban Challenge Fund, ₹10,000 crore for 2025-26, to finance bankable projects and improve infrastructure.
The government will set up an Urban Challenge Fund of ₹1 lakh crore to finance up to 25% of bankable projects and allocated ₹10,000 crore for 2025-26, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday (February 1, 2025).
She said the fund will be used to implement the proposals for cities as growth hubs, and creative redevelopment.

Ms. Sitharaman also announced measures for electricity distribution and improving the financial health of DISCOMS (distribution companies).
Additional borrowing of 0.5% of state GDP to be allowed to strengthen electricity distribution and transmission companies, the finance minister said, adding that with a corpus of ₹25,000 crore, a Maritime Development fund would be set up for distributing support and promoting competition.
In 2022, ActionAid conducted a survey to evaluate the status of RWH systems in Namma Metro infrastructure in Bengaluru. According to the ActionAid survey, an ideal RWH system includes pipes leading rainwater to percolate and recharge groundwater. However, their findings revealed that 8 pipes were found to be broken, 4 pits were clogged, 7 were filled with trash, 60 were not visible near the pillars, 5 water storage tanks were broken, among other problems in places where the system was implemented.
