Union Education Minister defends naming DU college after Savarkar, emphasizing BJP's aim to present all historical perspectives.
Reacting to the recent controversy over naming Delhi University (DU)’s new college after Hindutva ideologue V.D. Savarkar, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday said the BJP was “not trying to change the history but bring out all its aspects”.
“We [BJP] are not trying to change history but to bring out all its aspects. I am confident that DU will make history a subject of social discussion from the right perspective. History works as a mirror to see the future, so I have full faith that DU will show the true mirror of this country’s civilisation,” Mr. Pradhan posted on X.
Speaking at an event of the University of Delhi Foundation, a not-for-profit company, the Union Minister said several people who objected to Savarkar’s name had a “colonial mindset”.
“Savarkar was a great nationalist, but a section of society with a colonial mindset has objections to the DU college being named after him… I want to thank the university for naming the college after him,” Mr. Pradhan said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually laid the foundation stone for the Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura, Najafgarh.
Earlier, the Congress student wing National Students’ Union of India asked Mr. Modi to name the college after the late Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, while the Left-wing student organisation — Students’ Federation of India — suggested social reformer Savitribai Phule’s name.
During the event, Mr. Pradhan, accompanied by BJP Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari, distributed laptops to women and visually impaired beneficiaries.
