BJP supporters and activists, led by local leaders, staged a demonstration in the city on Tuesday in protest against the statement of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on ‘changing the Constitution to pave the way for reservation on religious grounds’.
Though Mr. Shivakumar has clarified that he has been misquoted, the BJP activists expressed their ire and described his clarification as an exercise in damage control.
Krishnaraja MLA T.S. Srivatsa, who addressed the BJP activists, called for the dismissal of Mr. Shivakumar from the Cabinet. “His statements are anti-Constitutional and hence he should be sacked,” said Mr.Srivatsa.
The MLA said it was a fit case for taking up the issue suo moto and arresting the Dy.CM but the police was not acting. “Even in the honeytrap issue, it is the name of Shivakumar that prominently figures and yet no action has been initiated against him,” said Mr. Srivatsa.
Former MLA L. Nagendra led the protest near Town Hall where the BJP activists garlanded the statue of B.R. Ambedkar, and raised slogans against Mr. Shivakumar. Mr. Nagendra said if no action was initiated against the leader, protests would be intensified and held across all 224 Assembly constituencies in the State.

The sun is already high in the sky, beating down fiercely on our heads, when we reach Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace in Chamrajpet, Bengaluru. But inside the beautiful high-ceilinged structure, it is surprisingly pleasant, the interiors airy and light-filled. According to a plaque outside the two-storied edifice made out of wood, stone, mortar and plaster, construction here was started by Hyder Ali Khan in 1781 and completed by his son, Tipu Sultan, in 1791, eight years before the Tiger of Mysore would be killed by the British in 1799.
