Bengaluru: BBMP attaches 81,000 properties over non-payment of tax this fiscal

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has sealed 6,914 non-residential properties and attached 81,644 properties this financial year till January 4 for non-payment of property tax dues. The total number of defaulters as on Monday was 2,06,753 and the total dues from these properties stands at ₹329.15 crore.

The civic body in the last one week sealed 203 non-residential properties and attached 180 properties, according to the latest data shared by BBMP and which is available with The Hindu. This is one of the highest number of closures after the civic body’s One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme ended.
Launched in February, the OTS scheme provided significant relief by waiving compounding interest on arrears and reducing penalties by 50%. Initially set to expire in July, the scheme was first extended to the end of September. Later, on demand, it was again extended to November 30. To boost collection, the BBMP had also carried out door-to-door visits educating the defaulters and others about the scheme.
The BBMP till January 4 collected ₹ 4,370 crore in tax in 2024-2025 financial year, which is 25% more than 2023-2024 (till January). In the previous financial year, the collection stood at ₹3,487 crore. The target for this financial year is ₹5,210 crore. The OTS helped boost collection.
According to the data shared by BBMP Special Commissioner (Revenue), Munish Moudgil, with 77, the East Zone of the BBMP saw the highest number of closures, followed by the West Zone where 68 buildings were sealed down. Dasarahalli saw the least number of closures with the Revenue Department sealing two properties.
The BBMP this financial year has revised tax of 15,731 properties and the total pending amount estimated after revision was ₹398.49 crore. The revision was done for properties who were paying tax fixed for residential properties, despite operating under commercial category. The BBMP has so far recovered ₹114.82 crore from 9,260 properties.
