Bangladesh High Court commutes Paresh Barua's death sentence to life for 2004 arms haul, still absconding.
A Bangladesh High Court on Wednesday commuted the 2014 death sentence against ULFA leader Paresh Barua and turned it into a life sentence.
Barua and 13 others were awarded death penalty in 2016, in connection with an arms haul in 2004. He has been absconding from Bangladesh since then.
The police had seized 10 trucks carrying weapons and ammunition from the state-owned Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Ltd. jetty while the arms were being offloaded from two fishing trawlers.
Investigations revealed that the weapons were manufactured in China and were being shipped to the ULFA.

The Karnataka government has drafted a comprehensive master plan for the integrated development of Kukke Subrahmanya temple, the State’s highest revenue-generating temple managed by the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department. The redevelopment initiative is estimated to cost around ₹254 crore and aims to enhance infrastructure and facilities for devotees.
