Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine as Light’ has earned BAFA Film Awards nods in the Best Director, Original Screenplay and Best Film not in the English language categories
Payal Kapadia’s highly-acclaimed All We Imagine as Lighthas earned three nods in the BAFA Film Awards 2025 longlists. The Malayalam film recently dropped on Disney+ Hotstar.
All We Imagine as Light has been nominated in the Best Director, Original Screenplay and Best Film not in the English language categories. Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam, the movie clinched the Grand Prix prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May, 2024.
Sean Baker, Brady Corbet and Denis Villeneuve are Kapadia’s competitors in the Best Director. Black Dog, The Count of Monte Cristo and Emilia Perez are the frontrunners in the Best Film category.
Kapadia’s film, an ode to Mumbai, reflects the underlying loneliness experienced by three women who are outsiders in the big city. Working as nurses at a hospital, they hold on to each other as they fight their inner battles amid the bustling world of Mumbai.

All We Imagine as Light, which clinched the Best International Feature at Gotham Awards in December, 2024, has earned two Golden Globes 2025 nominations (Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film). The film topped former US president Barack Obama’s list of recommended films of the year 2024.
The movie was recently in the news when it wasn’t picked as India’s official entry to the Oscars by the Film Federation of India (FFI). Laapata Ladies, Kiran Rao’s directorial, was chosen as India’s official submission. The movie fell out of Oscars race. Kapadia’s film, an international co-production, was shortlisted by France as a potential submission for the Oscars.
