Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad stops chicken supply to carnivores amid Avian Influenza concerns, switches to mutton, beef and pork
The Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad has halted the supply of chicken and eggs to carnivores as a precautionary measure amid reports of chicken deaths in neighbouring States due to suspected Avian Influenza.
The zoo authorities used to feed 35 kgs of chicken and about 140 eggs to carnivores, including tigers, lions, panther and jaguars, zoo sources said on Friday (February 14, 2025). The meat-eating animals are now fed mutton, beef and pork in place of chicken and eggs, they said.
Spread over an area of 380 acres, the zoo is home to a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.
Following the rise in chicken deaths in neighbouring States due to suspected Avian Influenza, Telangana has intensified checking at inter-state border check posts to prevent transportation of sick birds into the State and strengthened bio-security measures, a senior official of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry said two days ago. Reports indicate the culling of large numbers of chickens in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra in recent days.

The Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) whether it would fulfil the poll promise of providing free LPG cylinders to women on Holi. Hitting back, the ruling party asked AAP why had it not kept its word on disbursing ₹1,000 to women for which it had allocated ₹2,000 crore in the 2024-25 budget. Meanwhile, Delhi government sources said officials are preparing a blueprint of the proposal and that the criteria for the beneficiaries is yet to be decided. The BJP had promised to provide LPG cylinders for ₹500 to women from poor families and one free cylinder each on Holi and Deepavali ahead of the February 5 Assembly election.
