Karnataka Forest Department reports 393 tigers in five reserves, with fluctuations due to dispersal movement, stable overall population.
There are 393 tigers in the five tiger reserves of the State as per the 2024 Phase IV monitoring conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department.
In comparison, the State had 408 tigers in the 2023 exercise, 417 in 2022, while it was 472 in the 2018 exercise that was conducted in Bandipur, Nagarahole, Bhadra, Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple (BRT), and Kali (Dandeli-Amshi) tiger reserves.
On Thursday, the Forest Department authorities released the data of the Phase IV exercise conducted in 2024. It was shared by the Minister for Forests, Environment, and Ecology Eshwar B. Khandre.
The phase IV exercise of 2024 was conducted during November 2023 to February 2024.
Explaining the dip in the tiger figures, the authorities said a few individual tigers were observed moving across the landscape from one tiger reserve to another habitat, and there are multiple evidences indicating that the tigers have also dispersed from the reserves to adjoining habitats in search of territory.
Due to the dispersal movement of tigers, fluctuations are observed in the annual tiger population estimation of the five tiger reserves, said the authorities.
However, the State-wide tiger population, which is assessed once in every four years during the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE), has shown a steady increase in the tiger population in the State and the upcoming 2026 AITE exercise is expected to provide a clearer understanding of tigers that have established themselves in other protected areas after dispersing from the tiger reserves, said a senior official.
