The Central government enacted the Disaster Management Act on December 6, 2005, paving the way for the establishment of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
The NDRF was set up by drawing personnel from Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) such as Assam Rifles (AR), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
With 16 Battalions, the NDRF responds to floods, earthquakes, accidents and other emergency situations in and outside the country.
Since its inception, the NDRF has saved 1.55 lakh lives, besides evacuating more than 8 lakh people during disasters, the NDRF officials said.
In Andhra Pradesh, the force is deployed for rescue and rehabilitation operations during floods, cyclones, industrial accidents and other natural calamities, NDRF 10th Battalion Commandant V.V.N. Prasanna Kumar said.
Meanwhile, the Krishna and NTR Commissionerate police have made elaborate security arrangements for the Union Home Minister’s visit to the State.
