Payal Kapadia’s widely acclaimed All We Imagine as Light did not win a prize at the 82nd Golden Globes, held in Beverly Hills, California, USA on Sunday night.
The film, set in India with producers in five countries, was nominated in two categories at the glamorous awards: Best Non-English Language Film and Best Director (Motion Picture). Kapadia had made history by becoming the first Indian director to be nominated for a Globe.
All We Imagine as Light chronicles the friendship and longings of two Malayali nurses cohabiting in Mumbai. Starring Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha, the film had a phenomenon awards run, starting with its historic Grand Prix win at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The film was honoured at multiple other festivals and awards.
Kapadia graced the red carpet of the 82nd Golden Globes and attended the ceremony. She was nominated alongside seasoned international directors like Sean Baker (Anora) and Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez). Brady Corbet, nominated for his acclaimed film The Brutalist, won in the category.
For Best Non-English Language Film, Kapadia’s film lost out to Emilia Perez.
The Golden Globes are the first major pitstop of the Hollywood awards season, and are viewed as a precursor to the Oscars.
Earlier, All We Imagine as Light was passed up as India’s official submission to the 2025 Academy Awards, set to be held in March. Kiran Rao’s Laapaataa Ladies, which was the country’s official submission, did not make the final shortlist.
