Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi members protest in Pudukottai demanding justice for activist Jagaber Ali's murder and illegal quarrying.
A group of members of Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi staged a protest in Pudukottai on Wednesday, demanding justice for murdered activist Jagaber Ali, who had alleged illegal stone quarrying in Thirumayam area.
About 85 members led by party district secretary S. Niyaz Ahmad took out a rally carrying placards from PLA round tana to some distance and staged a protest for nearly an hour. Activist SP Udayakumar who was a key figure in the resistance to the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tirunelveli district participated in the protest.
The protesters demanded action against all those who were directly and indirectly responsible for the activist’s killing.
Seeking a Crime Branch CID probe into the murder, the protesters demanded that a case be booked against government officials concerned to whom Jagaber Ali had petitioned complaining of illegal quarrying.
They wanted the authorities to detain those responsible for the killing under the Goondas Act and expedite the probe and secure punishment for the killers. They urged the State government to provide Rs. 50 lakh as compensation to the family of Jagaber Ali besides providing protection for them and a government job for one of the family members. Later, a delegation of party members submitted a memorandum containing their demands to an official at the Pudukottai District Collectorate.
Meanwhile, a team of officials of the Department of Geology and Mining conducted an inspection in a stone quarry at Malaikudipatti village in Thirumayam taluk. The team had carried out a day-long inspection in a quarry at Thulaiyanur on Tuesday against which Jagaber Ali had levelled allegations of illegal quarrying. The quarry owner, Rasu, was among the four persons arrested in connection with the murder.
