27th Inter Polytechnic Games and Sports Meet begins on a grand note in Visakhapatnam
Around 1,230 students, including 510 girls, from as many as 138 polytechnic colleges across the State attended the 27th Inter Polytechnic Games and Sports Meet, which was kickstarted at Government Polytechnic College, here on Tuesday. North Andhra Teachers Constituency MLC P Raghu Varma inaugurated the programme.
He was accompanied by Joint Director of Technical Education V. Padma Rao, Principal, Government Polytechnic, Coordinator of this meet, K Narayana Rao, and others.
Mr. Padma Rao stressed the need for sports activities among the students along with education. He said that students who win at the State-level would be sent for the South Indian inter-State competitions.
Mr. Narayana Rao thanked Director of Technical Education Ganesh Kumar for selecting Government Polytechnic, Visakhapatnam, to host the sports meet.
Various sports like kabaddi, volleyball and other sports were organised on the first day. Students enthusiastically took part.
Built in 1927 during the British era, this marketplace has been a hub of activity for decades, offering everything from fresh produce and flowers to meat, dry fruits and exotic spices. However, years of neglect, accidents and infrastructure wear and tear have taken a toll on this heritage structure. During the 2012 fire incident at the market, more than 170 out of 440 shops, and the general infrastructure of the market was destroyed. The shops were given a basic makeover then. Since then, only the exterior of the market has been renovated, leaving the interiors and the roof untouched for more than a decade.
