Mohan Alva, Kaup MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty, and MRG Group Managing Director Gourav P. Shetty are among those expected to attend the event to be held at Gold Finch City, Bangra Kuloor, near Mangaluru from 3.30 pm. on December 25.
Mr. Shetty conceived the idea of organising such a donation programme when well-wishers arranged his 60th birthday celebrations in 2019. Starting with about 1,000 families and a purse of about ₹1.25 crore, the scheme has been growing every year. While assistance in healthcare and education sectors has helped hundreds of individuals, support to organisations has resulted in public asset creation thereby bringing in positive changes in society. Though the disbursal programme is held once a year on December 25, he continues to support the needy throughout the year, the entrepreneur said.
Beneficiaries are selected from Dakshina Kannada, Kasargod, Udupi and Shivamogga districts irrespective of caste or religion after receiving applications and scrutinising them to ascertain the actual need. Arrangement is made to bring them to the venue and drop them back on December 25 while volunteers in 10 counters would assist them. Neravu scheme support is continued to students who are in need of long-term assistance, Mr. Shetty said adding many beneficiaries have told him that they too have started assisting the needy upon getting jobs.
