Work on the construction of a new bus terminus at Srirangam is progressing at a fast pace.
Built on 1.08 acres of land on Gandhi Road near the Rajagopuram of Sriranganathaswamy temple at an estimate of ₹11.10 crore, the terminus is expected to fulfil the long-pending demand of the residents. The foundation stone for it was laid in December 2023 and work began in January end.
As per the plan, the terminus can accommodate eight buses at a time on the ground floor. The complex will have rooms for the staff, a sanitation complex, and 22 shops. There will be a multipurpose auditorium with a capacity to accommodate 260 persons and a dining hall to accommodate 140 persons on the first floor.
The bus terminus will have 13,500 sq. ft. of built up area. It will have a 10-metre wide approach road. The buses will enter from the Srirangam Government Hospital side and the exit near the sub-registrar office.
According to sources, more than 50% of the work has been completed. Construction of beams as part of the foundation and bus bays and concrete roof for the ground floor have been completed. Focus was on constructing 22 shops on the ground floor. Most of the concrete work had been completed. After the completion of building shops, plastering work would be taken up. Electrical and plumping work would be undertaken simultaneously. The project was to be completed within two years from the date of issuance of work order. It is scheduled to be completed before December and all indications pointed towards the terminus being ready well before the deadline.
