The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and supporters staged a protest on Thursday over the missing name of the former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, from the PM Palem Stadium.
The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and supporters staged a protest on Thursday over the missing name of the former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, from the PM Palem Stadium.
Named after YSR, the stadium is known as Dr. YSR ACA VDCA Stadium. The stadium, usually called Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA VDCA Stadium, has been renovated for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. However, the name of YSR was missing from the arch and main stadium building, which now reads ‘ACA VDCA International Cricket Stadium’.
The issue has triggered controversy as the YSRCP described it as a ‘deliberate attempt to erase the legacy of YSR’.
Raising slogans against the NDA government, the YSRCP cadres led by former Minister Gudivada Amarnath staged a demonstration near the YSR statue, near the stadium and demanded that the authorities restore the name of Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy immediately.
After the demise of YSR in 2009, then members of the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) and Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA) named the stadium after the former Chief Minister, in recognition of his services to undivided Andhra Pradesh.
The stadium has gained fame by hosting many International and domestic cricket matches and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“The NDA government is trying to erase the brand image of Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy and the YSRCP,” Mr. Amarnath said.
