Valerie Plante declares victory in Montreal mayoral race

Incumbent mayoral candidate Valerie Plante has declared victory over Denis Coderre in Montreal's 2021 municipal election.
"What [voters] have confirmed tonight is that the election of Projet Montreal in 2017 wasn't just an accident," Plante said in a victory speech at 10:15.
"It was, in fact, the beginning of a new era, the beginning of governing Montreal in a different way... for the long term," she said, and in a "transparent" way.
With the vast majority of votes counted as of 11 p.m., Plante has about 53 per cent of the vote compared to 37 per cent won by her challenger, former mayor Denis Coderre. About 50,000 votes separated them.
She declared the victory just after 9 p.m. A crowd of supporters erupted in cheers at Theatre Olympia on Sainte-Catherine St., where the Plante campaign team was gathered to await results Sunday night.
