Special weather statements issued by Environment Canada across Prince Edward Island remain in effect, warning of significant freezing rain lasting four to eight hours today.
The weather agency says the rain will transition to freezing rain and ice pellets in the west of the province and make its way to the east in the afternoon.
CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin said this system is slow-moving, meaning the rain can take time to settle in and significantly impact the province.
"The freezing rain probably won't start until mid-morning and then into the afternoon. The further east you are, the longer that's going to be," she said.
"That freezing rain and ice pellet mix could accumulate on surfaces, making for some very slippery surfaces as we go through the mid-morning and certainly by this afternoon."
Environment Canada also warns Islanders to take extra caution when walking or driving in affected areas.
