Over the weekend, top U.S. health officials appeared on cable news shows to voice concern about coronavirus-related misinformation proliferating widely across social media, worsening the pandemic. As cases of the delta variant of COVID-19 are on the rise, the Biden administration has ramped up its warnings about the danger online misinformation poses to public health. The overwhelming majority of hospitalizations and deaths from the new variant are occurring among unvaccinated Americans. “The reality is that misinformation is still spreading like wildfire in our country aided and abetted by technology platforms,” Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said on “Fox News Sunday.”
