
Top California education official announces bid to replace Newsom as governor

California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, the highest education official in the state, announced his candidacy for governor on Wednesday
"Our campaign isn't about any one person. It's about people who are struggling across our state," Thurmond said in his campaign announcement. The superintendent, who previously received an endorsement from Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, admitted in July that he was seriously considering a run for governor, registering "Tony Thurmond for Governor 2026" that month.
